RESERVING JOGJA

Have you ever heard the name of Jogja? Yes, Jogja is the name closely related to the ancient feodal life of Mataram Kingdom. In the past, Jogja is an independent kingdom. Since the declaration of independence of Indonesia in 1945, Jogja(or Jogjakarta) declared itself to be the part of the Unified state of the Republic of Indonesia. Jogja was granted a special status of autonomous region.
In modern life, Jogja (some local people prefer the traditional name of Ngayogyakarta or Yogyakarta) is just like other urban areas. Only some ancient buildings and traditional attires that manifest the grandeur of old Jogja. Malls and department stores have replaced some traditional heritages. Traditional markets have been abandoned by the buyers. Most of the people, unfortunately, do not speak Bahasa Jawa Halus any more. They speak it only in traditional ceremonies and feudal sessions. Even worse, the Javanese letters (a transcription system that contains 20 letters) are approaching extinction. It is not used in any formal administration and correspondence system.
Jogja is now developing into an urban life style. It has undergone cultural transformation so far. Unless we make some serious attempt to reserve the traditionally respected values, and without any wise adaptation to global changes, Jogja will turn into a merely historical topic.
